Greetings
Everyone!
It has been a busy month at City-Works, and we would like to thank
everyone who has pledged support in our 2008 Capacity Campaign. If you
have not done so already, please visit our website and donate online.
Even small donations of $25 help us with our daily work.
We are pleased by the reception our New Orleans Neighborhood Profiles Map
has received since going online. If you have not seen the neighborhood
maps or read the corresponding paper, follow the links to the online
resource. We have also highlighted bike and pedestrian transportation
this month. The opening of the St. Claude bike lane is a great first step
in building alternative transportation in New Orleans. Even the
mainstream City Business has recognized its importance.
Rebuilding a sustainable New Orleans requires the dilligent work of many
different people. Together, we are working towards a better city:

Bike Lane Opens on St.
Claude Avenue
Residents and visitors
to New Orleans now have an official bike lane available for use along St.
Claude Avenue. The roughly 3-mile stretch covers the historic avenue from
Elysian Fields Avenue to the St. Bernard Parish line, and has five-foot
painted borders. City-Works attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony on May
20th, and we are pleased to see healthy, sustainable initiatives like
this come to New Orleans.
New Orleans City Business recently ran an article about the higher number of New Orleanians
using bicycles as their main form of transportation, including the
difficulties they face in a city that has not had many established bike
routes. As gas prices rise, people are turning to their bicycles to
reduce their monthly transportation costs, to lower their impact on the
environment, and simply to get more exercise. The St. Claude bike lane
improves their ability to commute and should have a positive impact
citywide as drivers become aware of the lane and the distance they are
expected to allow cyclists. This is decidedly a good step towards increasing
our awareness of bicyclists on the street and, thereby, their safety.
More information regarding the bike path can be found at the Times-Picayune, The International Herald Tribune, and at the New Orleans City Business website.
Thanks to Will at Prosthetically Hip for allowing us to use his

Spotlight
on Sustainability
Global Green Brings Green Housing to Holy Cross
On May 15th, 2008, Global Green celebrated the completion
of their first green house in Holy Cross. The house is the first of five
single-family homes, planned for Global Green's Holy Cross Project. The
plan also includes an 18-unit apartment building, a community center, and
a climate resource center which will give Holy Cross residents the tools
they need to make their homes more energy efficient. According to their website,
Global Green is working to turn New Orleans into a model city of
sustainable design: "The goal of the project is to achieve LEED
Platinum standards (LEED for Home for the single-family homes, and LEED
NC for the other buildings), net zero energy and carbon neutral"
---all in a impecably designed modern package. The picture above is of
the house, which is now open for scheduled tours. More information
regarding Global Green and the Holy Cross house may found at their website.
