New=20 Symposium Series
First=20 Symposium Event Tuesday, October 14
"Yes = or No -=20 A Master Plan with the Force of = Law"

City-Works, in=20 partnership with the Center for Urban and Public = Affairs at=20 the University of New Orleans, announces a new = symposium=20 series to inform the community on issues of = sustainable=20 land-use and development in New Orleans. This series = will=20 tackle a wide range of topics promoting sustainable=20 development and quality growth for New Orleans. Our = goal is to=20 provide high quality information to the public in an = engaging=20 atmosphere that will move beyond rhetoric and fanciful = ideas=20 to pragmatic solutions to the challenges facing our = recovery.=20 In coming months, symposium topics will include=20 transportation, neighborhood corridor revitalization, = and the=20 relationship between crime and urban design. =

We will=20 begin the series with a voter education forum entitled = "Yes or=20 No -- A Master Plan with the Force of Law" to be held = on=20 Tuesday, October 14 at 6-8 PM. Voters in New Orleans = will go=20 to the polls on November 4th to decide whether or not = to=20 approve an amendment to the Home Rule Charter that = will give=20 legal standing to the city's Master Plan.  This = amendment=20 will dramatically change how the city makes land use = and=20 development decisions.

If the = amendment is=20 approved, this Master Plan, unlike any of the previous = post-Katrina planning processes, will be legally = binding.=20 Public officials as well as private citizens will be = required=20 to follow the Plan.  All land use regulations, = including=20 the new Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance, capital = improvements,=20 and the capital budget will have to be consistent with = the=20 Master Plan.  Any zoning amendments adopted by = the City=20 Council will have to be consistent with the Master = Plan. =20 In the forum, speakers will address the real = implications of=20 having "force of law" behind the Master Plan, thus = shedding=20 light on potential consequences of the upcoming = charter=20 amendment vote.  This educational forum will help = all=20 voters in New Orleans make a decision on this = important=20 issue.

"Yes or No - A Master Plan with = the Force=20 of Law" will take place Tuesday, October 14th from = 6-8:00=20 pm.  Symposium events are held in the first floor = lecture=20 auditorium, Room 129, of Kirschman Hall on the UNO=20 campus.  All events are free and open to the=20 public.
