With its founding in the fall of 2005, City-Works filled a critical gap in the local effort to rebuild New Orleans after the devastating flood following Hurricane Katrina. To date, City-Works is the only non-profit in New Orleans with the capacity to provide technical assistance to neighborhoods and other stakeholder organizations as they navigate design and land use issues. City-Works’ membership roles and Board of Advisors include leaders in professional associations for architecture, urban planning, public policy, and sustainable building. Through these members, City-Works has access to expert analysis for any design or development problem.
Urban Impact
City-Works has partnered with Urban Impact, a non-profit housing developer in Central City, to provide innovative design solutions to meet the housing needs of neighborhood residents. Recognizing the critical need for quality, affordable housing across New Orleans, City-Works is working with Urban Impact to rebuild housing units on odd-shaped Central City lots. The traditional settlement pattern for Central City includes shotgun houses on small lots that are often less than 30 feet across. Keeping affordability and innovation at the forefront of the design process, City-Works produced 5 model homes that maximize livable space in minimal footprints, while retaining the architectural character of the area. These models are now available to potential Central City homeowners as they work to rebuild their neighborhood. For more informaiton on this project, click HERE.
