With its founding in the fall of 2005, City-Works filled a critical gap in the local effort to rebuild New Orleans after the devastating flood following Hurricane Katrina. To date, City-Works is the only non-profit in New Orleans with the capacity to provide technical assistance to neighborhoods and other stakeholder organizations as they navigate design and land use issues. City-Works’ membership roles and Board of Advisors include leaders in professional associations for architecture, urban planning, public policy, and sustainable building. Through these members, City-Works has access to expert analysis for any design or development problem.
Office of Recovery Management (ORM)
As a networking organization, City-Works has offered its services to the City of New Orleans’ Office of Recovery Management in order to facilitate communications between the ORM and community organizations. Through its efforts, City Works has assisted the ORM in describing the ongoing rebuilding process and explaining plans for major projects in the seventeen targeted Recovery and Rebuilding Zones.

City-Works’ efforts have included hosting the first two of a series of quarterly breakfast meetings between the Office of Recovery Management and non-profit policy makers; promoting Dr. Ed Blakely’s information-gathering bike rides through city neighborhoods; securing a grant for the AIA Sustainable Design Assessment Team to study the South Claiborne Avenue Recovery Zone; conducting an early meeting of neighborhood organizations and interested parties to discuss development along the South Carrollton Avenue Recovering Zone; and partnering with other organizations to host a community lecture by Avi Friedman, an international expert in Low Income Housing.
